The US consumer group Public Citizen has made public the results of an unpublished clinical trial of celecoxib that finished four years ago, which appears to show a significant increase in risk of cardiovascular events with the drug. The trial aimed to determine whether celecoxib had any effect on the progression of Alzheimer's disease and its results have been made available on an industry website of clinical trials. Public Citizen have calculated that patients in the active drug group had a 3.6 times greater rate of serious cardiac events than those on placebo, and are using this data as part of their campaign to have celecoxib and valdecoxib removed from the market by the FDA. [Editor's comment: Public Citizen is an extremely vocal campaign group with a record of taking controversial stands; they are alleging that Pfizer have previously tried to hide this study.] From Reuters Health for 1st February 2005, via Medscape (free registration required);
